Film Certification
After looking at the information on the BBFC we have decided that the film we will be creating will be rated a 15. This means our film is not suitable for children under 15 years of age and no-one under 15 will be allowed to see our film at the cinema or buy/rent it.
BBFC 15 certification
15 – Suitable only for 15 years and over No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work.
Discrimination The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language. Drugs Drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse (for example, through instructional detail). The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable. Imitable behaviour Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting.
Language There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification. Nudity There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There may be nudity in a sexual context but usually without strong detail. Sex Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable. Threat There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable. Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but the depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by context
Although 15 rated films can have sexual nudity, brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence this will not happen within our film. There will not be discriminatory language or behaviour however, there will be brief drug taking of alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking. Our film will contain strong violence and strong language throughout. This is because our film is a thriller/ action film and therefore violence will be a main part of the film. The strong language will be said during the film by many different people in particular the group of bad people that try to steal the device e.g. when the MI5 agent tries to steal the device, strong language is used by the bad man. When both MI5 agents find each other including the girl who tries to steal the device and the man who is under cover, a sexual relationship happens and therefore there are portrayals of sexual activity and strong verbal references to sex. Due to the amount of violence in the film, we do not think our film is suitable to people under 15 especially due to most 12 films being 12A at the cinema allowing younger children to watch the film with an adult. Also the sexual activity portrayed would be inappropriate in a 12 film. As our film does not show full nudity of people or dwelling on violence (e.g. showing long scenes of torture/ showing people suffering for a long time due to violence) we do not think this film should be an 18.
Sophie Thomas
An example of a film that is a 15 and has the same genre as ours is the equalizer. The reason being why this is a 15 is due to the fact that there is a lot of violence and gore which, appears to be very graphic in the movie. Therefore, this wouldn't be suitable for younger aged children.
